Kate Spade New York

Kate Spade eyewear is focused on maintaining a timeless chic style, often recalling the styles of the 1960s and 1970s in both shape and color. In partnership with top eyewear industry leader Safilo Group, the collection includes Sun, Optical and Readers.

My role was to lead the seasonal design direction, drawing on the unique and distinctive details and brand codes of the leather goods and jewelry. With only 9 new Sun styles a season, the eyewear design teams were challenged to strike a balance between the super fashion shapes (aligned with the runway collections), and the commercial and easy to wear shapes (which drove the business), all in the feminine colors and prints the brand is known for.

NORAH RUNWAY SUN STYLE

Norah was the most important fashion style for Spring 2020 runway. Referencing a classic 70's acetate Carrera aviator, we softened the shape and dipped the brow bar so that the result was nostalgic, but feminine - a unique twist on this shape for Kate Spade. The earthy green and caramel Havana tones paired perfectly with tonal lenses.

LILLIAN RUNWAY SUN STYLE

Lillian was designed as a fashion style in the commercial ‘Spade Flower filigree’ group. Light and airy is trending in eyewear, and the transparent acetate has a super modern appeal. I love flash of gorgeous gold filigree at the temple. This group was super successful, and we rounded it out with a range of other more commercial shapes (see below), including acetates, metals and optical.

BRITTON COMMERCIAL SUN STYLE

Cat eye shapes were always a winner for the Kate Spade eyewear customer. Britton is a soft cat; a commercial size but with a nod to the oversize trend she might be loving but not quite ready for. The classic Havana was infused with hits of lavender for a super wearable fashion neutral. Most important here is the sleek and modern 'spade bar temple' - a detail we translated from handbag hardware and jewelry and redesigned for eyewear.

Pilot shapes are consistently among the top sellers in Sun. The challenge is how to innovate and differentiate your pilot from the many competitor iterations. Geneva had a full metal rim and slightly dipped, feminine brow bar for super classic aviator styling, with hinged metal temple hidden behind the new brand code "faceted metal spade" found across all leather goods and jewelry product. The hinged temple gave us the opportunity to play with material and color, mixing metal colors, tortoise acetate, solids and print on the exterior and interior temple.
